Exploring Nassau, Bahamas: More Than Just a Port Stop

Nassau, Bahamas is one of the most visited ports in the Eastern Caribbean—and for good reason. It's colorful, close to the cruise docks, and packed with both relaxing and adventurous things to do. If you’ve cruised here before, you might be tempted to stay on the ship—but trust me, Nassau has more to offer than you think!

British Colonial – A Beach Day Within Walking Distance
On one of my visits, I purchased a day pass at the British Colonial Hotel. It's ideal if you want a beach day without the hassle of taxis or long walks. The property includes loungers, umbrellas, and a beachfront view of the cruise ships in port. Perfect for a half-day of sun and sea.
Note: The British Colonial has undergone renovations (as of July 2025) and is expected to reopen as part of the Hilton Curio Collection, so check availability when planning.

Blue Lagoon Island – A Private Island Escape
This private island is a must for a relaxing beach day with just the right amount of adventure. You’ll take a short ferry ride and then enjoy:
Reserved loungers or daybeds
Optional BBQ lunch included in some packages
Dolphin and sea lion encounters
Floating obstacle course (great for families!)
Plenty of photo ops, shops, and shaded areas
It's perfect for couples, families, or solo travelers looking for a more curated beach experience.

Free and Public Beaches
If you're on a budget or prefer a DIY experience, Nassau has several beaches you can access for free or cheap:
Junkanoo Beach – Closest to the port, with beach bars and music.
Cabbage Beach – A quieter option on Paradise Island (short cab or water taxi ride).
Cable Beach – Known for calm waters and soft white sand.
Nearby Attractions & Must-Sees
Atlantis Resort – Aquariums, casinos, and waterpark fun
Margaritaville – Chill vibe with a lazy river and rooftop bar
Queen’s Staircase – A bit of history carved into limestone
The Straw Market – Shop for local handmade souvenirs
John Watling’s Distillery – Great for rum tastings and photo ops
Local Eats
Don't skip trying authentic conch salad, cracked conch, or Bahamian rum cake! There are vendors right outside the port offering a delicious taste of the islands.

Final Thoughts
If Nassau is one of your port stops, don’t overlook it—even if you’ve been before. Each trip offers something different. Whether you're lounging on a beach, sipping rum at a distillery, or shopping for souvenirs, this vibrant island has plenty to offer for every type of cruiser.
